Although it only stands about a foot tall at the shoulder, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel stands with obvious elegance and fearlessness. A breed with royal heritage, these dogs were named after King Charles II of Britain.

For hundreds of years, these dogs have been weaved into tapestries and included in family paintings of aristocrats and royalty. Unlike so many other breeds, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was intended for family life. Many other breeds were bred for work of various types.

Nevertheless, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has been used by some of these high-class families for the sport of hunting. The breed has proved itself helpful for hunting small game.

As a family dog, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel makes an excellent companion for children and adults alike. These dogs do not need trimming, but they do require weekly brushing for their silky coats. Their coats come in four colors: tricolor (white, black and tan), ruby, black and tan, and Blenheim (chestnut with white).

With an affectionate and playful disposition, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is also able to relax for hours on the couch or by an owner’s side. While vigorous exercise is not necessary for this adaptable breed, the dogs do enjoy regular walks. Obedience training is very effective for this breed, making them a pleasant and happy addition to any family.
