June 27, 2012The German Wirehaired Pointer was bred using several different dog breeds to obtain a multi-purpose hunting dog. Some of the dogs used in the beginning of the breeding process are the German Shorthair, the Griffon, the Pudelpointer, and the Stichelhaar. These breeds are mixes bred from Foxhounds, Pointers and Poodles. The breeders continued working with these three breeds until they had the German Wirehaired Pointer.

The German Shorthaired Pointer is one of many dog breeds whose specific origins or time of original breeding cannot be traced. However, it would appear that the German Bird Dog, the English Pointer, the old Spanish Pointer, and other German track and trail dogs makeup the German Shorthaired Pointer’s heritage.

In the 1800s, the French Bulldog was bred in Century Nottingham, England. The goal was to create a smaller version of the bulldog, a lap-sized bulldog. It was lace makers that bred the dogs and they, once displaced to France during the Industrial Revolution, carried the breed to France with them. From there, Americans on the Grand Tour brought them back home with them, calling them “French Bulldogs.”

May 29, 2012Like the Daschund, the Doberman Pinscher can trace its history to Germany. But the Doberman Pinscher originated much later, around the turn of the 20th century. A tax collector named Louis Doberman of Apolda initiated the breed’s development as he desired a companion dog that could also guard well. It is believed that a breeder used the German Pinscher, the Rottweiler, and the Black and Tan Terrier to develop this breed.

The Daschund is well-known for its long, low torso, making it resemble a hot dog. A fun and energetic breed, they stem from Germany in the 1600s when they were bred to dig into badger burrows and then boldly attack and kill the deadly animals. The Chow Chow is of ancient origin. With its roots so old that they cannot be fully traced, it is at least known that they appear in sculptures and pottery dated back to the Chinese Han Dynasty of 206 B.C. to 22 A.D.
