A small and unique-looking breed, the Chinese Crested is a tiny dog standing no more than eleven inches tall at the shoulders. The hairless variety actually does have some hair, but only on its head, tail, and feet, making the dog appear to be wearing socks and a long wig.

The Chihuahua is one of the best-known dogs in the world. Famous for its small size, disproportionately large ears, and great big eyes, these dogs have starred in numerous movies such “Legally Blond,” “Chihuahua,” and “Beverly Hills Chihuahua.”

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is the state dog of Maryland, so named because it was bred along the Chesapeake Bay. Standing approximately two feet tall at the shoulders, these dogs are built for working both on land and on water.

Although it only stands about a foot tall at the shoulder, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel stands with obvious elegance and fearlessness. A breed with royal heritage, these dogs were named after King Charles II of Britain.

The Brittany is an elegant breed with a keen alert pose. Its short tail points out and its head is held high, putting off the appearance of standing ready for action. This posture is part of what has made it increasingly popular as a competitor in dog shows.

The bloodhound is an ancient breed, having been around long before the Crusades, when Europe imported some of the dogs from Constantinople. A skilled hunting dog, the Bloodhound is known for its incredibly keen and accurate sense of smell.

From afar off, the Bichon Frise resembles a fluffy white marshmallow or cotton ball. Its soft and full fur coat is pristine white, as long as the dog is clean. Additionally, it may have some apricot, buff, or cream accents.

In the 13th century, the Bichon Frise originally stemmed from the Water Spaniel. Spanish sailors used these dogs on board their ships and carried them from country to country. 300 years after its birth as a breed, the Bichon Frise was a preferred pet in the French Royal Courts.

The Bernese Mountain Dog comes from the mountains of Switzerland. While there are three other breeds of Swiss Mountain Dogs, the Bernese is unique for its long silky fur. Originally a working dog in this cold region, the Bernese did droving and drafting with skill and fortitude.
